Design Technology

Nottingham High School

The Design Technology department offers pupils the opportunity to develop high level designing and making skills as well as significant opportunities to develop as independent learners.

Equally important are the opportunities offered to develop their leadership skills and the grit and determination necessary to complete project assignments successfully over an extended period of time. At Key Stage 3, pupils have had a varied and lively experience, with a curriculum with engaging, well-resourced projects and an established program of high quality lunchtime clubs that have allowed pupils to extend and develop further their curriculum project work.

The skills and knowledge put in place by the Year 7 to 9 courses have provided an excellent foundation for the level of success we have experienced at GCSE level.

At GCSE level, the subject has achieved each year a high proportions of A and A* grades. We have recently (2015) won the Good Schools Guide Gold Award for the best GCSE results nationally in our chosen DT specialism.

A number of our Y11 pupils go on to successfully gain prestigious Arkwright Scholarships each year. These pupils are then supported and mentored to become future leaders in engineering.

Our sixth form students enjoy high level of individual input from staff into their project work. We focus closely on developing a balance of high level technical and design skills and encourage pupils to engage with real clients to solve problems for through their designing and making projects. We have an extensive range of industrial contacts to help this process.

We have a strong co-curricular program and a long standing tradition of success in external engineering competitions at local, regional, national and international level.
